I had seen the movie when it was released, but the book had been on my must-read list for a long time. I have finally picked up the audio version. Oh my, what a brilliant narration by Jenna Lamia, Bahni Turpin, Octavia Spencer, and Cassandra Campbell! It has everything I like in historical fiction: the setting, the characters, the stories of women, and the time. It is a wise and mind-blowing story about three seemingly different women from Jackson, Mississippi, in the 1960s, who form an unlikely friendship that soon evolves into a remarkable sisterhood, challenging the status quo. Kathryn Stockett worked on the book for five years and, ultimately, created a masterpiece.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement forever changes a town and how women, mothers, daughters, caregivers, and friends view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by and those we don't. (Goodreads) We plan to rent and enjoy the movie tonight. :)
